Dear Parents,
During your child’s communication arts time, they are going to be given 15 minutes every day to read silently to themselves. This block of reading is called Independent Reading Time. They will read a book that they check out from the library, classroom library, or bring from home and will blog, answering different questions regarding their book.
However, it is our wish that this will not be the only time that your child reads during the day! We will also expect them to read at home, either 10 pages or 20 minutes, whichever comes last. For example, if they read for 20 minutes and only read 7 pages, they would need to continue reading until they have completed their 10 pages.
Also, we are going to require that at least 4 books total will be read per quarter. Your child will need to read 2 fiction and 2 non-fiction books. If your child is reading a bigger book (300+ pages), for every 150 pages, we will count that as 1 book. For example, if your child is reading a fiction book that is 380 pages, that will count as 2 fiction books. We will conference with your child on a regular basis to make sure that they are making progress and are achieving this goal.
Please encourage your child to read at home! Brainstorm with your child what time is best for them to read, where is best for them to read, and if reading out loud or silently would be beneficial. If you need book ideas please let us know and we may be able to help. Thank you so much for your cooperation!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Pam King and Mrs. Gina Garrison
